I don't know which grow light is right for you. Nobody does, unless they've seen your facility, your crop, and your power bill.
But here's what I can tell you after five years coordinating emergency equipment orders for commercial grows: the problem is rarely the brand. It's a mismatch between the light and the situation.
So instead of pretending there's one answer, let me break down the scenarios I see most often. Find the one that sounds like you.
Scenario A: You're Building a New Commercial Facility
You're starting from scratch. Maybe it's 5,000 square feet. Maybe it's 50,000. You're looking at Fluence LED, Gavita, and a few others. You're doing the math on upfront cost and wondering if the 40% premium is worth it.
I get it. But if you're building new, the sticker price is the wrong number to focus on.
DLC-listed horticulture lights now deliver around 2.5–3.0 μmol/J. Older or cheaper LEDs often sit at 1.8–2.0. On a 10,000-square-foot facility, that gap translates to roughly $1,200–$1,800 per month in electricity alone. Over a three-year crop cycle, that's $43,000–$65,000.
This is where the causation gets reversed. People assume expensive brands charge more because of marketing. Actually, brands that build more efficient lights have to charge more — better diodes, better thermal management, better drivers. The causation runs the other way.
We had a client in 2023 who chose the lowest upfront bid and saved $14,000 on equipment. By mid-2024, they'd paid an extra $19,000 in electricity. Their "savings" turned into a net loss inside 14 months.

This is where Zigbee comes into the conversation. If you're looking to buy Zigbee controllers for your grow lights, make sure your fixtures actually support them before you swipe your card. Not all LED drivers speak standard Zigbee protocol. Some need proprietary gateways. Some lock the control protocol entirely.
We've watched growers buy Zigbee controllers only to discover they were incompatible with their fixtures. That's a $200–$400 mistake per replacement, plus the time lost.
For smaller operations, the value calculation is different. You're measuring micromoles per square foot, not whole-facility output. A $200 light that delivers poor PPFD is expensive. A $500 light that hits your target DLI without supplemental CO2 is cheap.
Scenario D: You're Dealing with Light Ordinances or Compliance Issues
Let me be direct here. If you're asking "is there a light ordinance in my area," you've probably already had a complaint or a warning from your municipality.
Light ordinances vary wildly by state, county, and city. Some cover outdoor lighting. Some cover greenhouse light spill. Some cover both.
The International Dark-Sky Association maintains a database, but it's incomplete and often outdated. The most reliable approach: call your local planning or zoning office directly. Ask three specific questions: 1) Are there outdoor lighting limits? 2) Are there greenhouse light spill limits? 3) Are there curfew hours?
We had a client in 2024 who didn't do this and received a $3,400 fine. Their Fluence lights weren't the problem. Their lack of a light spill plan was.
How to Tell Which Scenario You're In
- New build? Efficiency matters most. Run the electricity math before you sign the PO.
- Retrofitting and keeping fixtures? Check your optics and ballasts. You might not need full replacements.
- Small operation or supplemental lighting? Verify controller compatibility first. That Zigbee controller might not do what you think.
- Getting compliance complaints? Call your local government before you upgrade anything. Understand the rules first.
