Here’s something most price comparisons completely ignore: where you hang the light.

A grow light positioned wrong performs worse than a weaker light positioned correctly. Too close, you burn the canopy. Too far, you stretch your seedlings. Both outcomes cost you real money.

I’ve been asked the same question at least a dozen times between 2020 and 2025: “How far above seedlings should a grow light be?”

People want a single magic number. There isn’t one. Here’s what our trial data across three facilities says (consistent with land-grant university extension guidance):

  • Standard white LED grow lights: 12–24 inches (30–60 cm) above the seedling canopy, at 20–40% power. Seedlings need consistent photons, not maximum photons.

The price on a quote is the beginning of the conversation, not the end of it. The true cost of a grow light includes the electricity wasted by poor efficiency, the crops damaged by incorrect light placement, the hours lost to missing documentation, and the risk of unverifiable performance claims.

A vendor willing to show those costs honestly isn’t charging you more. They’re saving you from everyone else’s hidden price tags.
