Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), advertising claims must be truthful, not misleading, and substantiated with evidence. Use that mindset when you read any marketing page — including filters, PPFD maps, and yield claims. Ask for raw test reports. Check the DLC listing if it applies.
My mistake: in 2019, I trusted a vendor's glossy brochure and skipped independent verification. The fixture's coverage pattern didn't match our narrow greenhouse bays. It was a $2,400 error and a three-week delay. I do not blame the vendor. I blame my shortcut.
Step 2: Match the light to your layout, not the spec sheet
Lighting companies print ideal coverage maps based on perfect conditions. Your greenhouse isn't perfect. Measure your bays, canopy height, and spacing before you compare numbers. A 1000W-equivalent fixture in a 4x8 tent works differently than in a 20x100 greenhouse.
And don't get distracted by gimmicks like a high fluence projection lens. That's a stage-lighting term, not horticulture. Plants need broad, uniform PPFD across the canopy — not a narrow, focused beam. The moment you see 'projection lens' on a grow light spec sheet, walk away.
If you're growing tall crops, consider inter-lighting. Fluence offers both top-lighting and inter-lighting fixtures. That's a real evolution in the industry — five years ago, inter-lighting was rare. Now it's standard in high-wire cucumber and tomato operations.
Step 3: Learn how to wire LED strip lights (and when not to)
Many facilities use LED strip lights for under-canopy or supplemental lighting. They're cheap, versatile, and easy to install. They're also easy to wire wrong. I know — I've done it.
Here's how to wire LED strip lights safely in a grow environment:
- Calculate your total wattage first. Don't guess — measure the strip length and check the watt-per-meter rating.
- Choose a power supply with at least 20% headroom. A 100W load should run on a 120W driver, not a 100W one.
- Wire strips in parallel unless the manufacturer explicitly says they're designed for series. Parallel keeps voltage consistent and prevents the end strips from being dimmer.
- Use the right wire gauge. For runs over 20 feet, use 14 AWG. For shorter runs, 18 AWG is fine. Undersized wire is a fire risk.
- Add a fuse or breaker between the driver and your strips. This is non-negotiable.
The USPS has strict dimension rules: a letter can be up to 6.125" x 11.5" and no more than 0.25" thick. Exceed those limits and it's reclassified as a flat — and costs more. Electrical components have hard limits too. Exceed them and the cost isn't just postage; it's smoke, downtime, and possibly worse.
My error: in 2022, I spliced 48 strips into a single 12V supply with no fuse. The smell was the first warning. By the time we cut power, we'd lost $700 in strips and spent hours venting the room. I got lucky. If I'd been away that weekend, the outcome could have been much worse.
Step 4: Set installation heights before you power everything up
'Set the light to the right height' sounds obvious, but I've seen entire rooms installed before a single measurement. Fluence's recommended mounting heights are based on actual PPFD maps. Ignore them and you'll either bleach your crop or under-deliver.
Use a quantum sensor to check PPFD at several points across the canopy. Adjust height and angle, then record everything. A simple note like '45cm above canopy, 900 µmol at center, 810 at edges' becomes your baseline for future decisions.
Step 5: Consider spotlight rentals before you commit
If you're not convinced Fluence is the right system for your operation, don't buy a pallet upfront. Look into lighting rental options — some suppliers offer spotlight rentals or trial programs for a crop cycle.
The upside is clear: you get real field data, not a brochure. The risk is the rental fee. When I weighed this in Q4 2024, the math was close. Renting two dozen fixtures cost about $2,000. Buying 200 fixtures would have been $30,000+. If the fixtures didn't work with our trellis spacing, we'd have been stuck. I rented. It saved us from a very expensive mistake.

After installation, measure the actual power draw with a watt-meter or current clamp. Compare it to the spec sheet. If the meters say one thing and the spec sheet says another, trust the meters.
Re-check your wiring connections after a week. Heat cycles can loosen screws and wago clips. A loose connection is a failure point waiting to happen.
Then run the real test: track plant growth or yield against your previous system. That's the only metric that matters. The gear isn't the goal; the crop is.
Final notes: quick mistakes to avoid
Here's a short list of things I've done or seen that will cost you money. Why does this matter? Because each of these mistakes costs money you'll never get back.
- Don't mix dimming wires from different controllers. Many drivers use 0-10V dimming, but wiring them in reverse can fry the controls.
- Don't assume all LED strip lights are IP67. In humid greenhouses, use IP65-rated strips and waterproof your connections.
- Don't forget lead times. A Fluence order might take longer during spring buildout season. Plan shipping and installation carefully.
- Don't rely on 'equivalent wattage' when comparing brands. Use measured PPFD at your target height.
The industry is evolving, and the good news is that the tech is better than it was even three years ago. But the basics — measuring, documenting, testing — are timeless. This checklist was created not because I'm smart, but because I've been burned. Use it. Then go measure your own canopy.
