Why Your Lighting Is Quietly Costing You Clients (And What Flickering Bulbs Taught Me)
In late 2024, I ordered six smart bulbs for our conference room. They were energy-efficient, dimmable, and about half the price of the premium option. Two weeks later, one of them started flickering, a subtle pulse you could catch on video calls but barely notice in person.

Actually, it's the reverse. The perception of light quality comes from spectrum, color rendering, uniformity, and driver stability. A 2,000-lumen spotlight with poor color rendering can make a beautiful lobby look like a hospital corridor. A 1,200-lumen fixture with a well-designed spectrum makes the same space feel intentional.
The assumption is that more light creates a better impression. The reality is that better light creates a better impression. They're not the same thing.
I learned this by doing it wrong. In early 2023, we refreshed our lobby reading area. I ordered 23 budget house spotlights from a new vendor, saved about $300. Within a month, employees complained about glare. The spotlights created harsh shadows, washed out the live plants we'd installed, and made the space feel sterile.

Second, ask about drivers. If you're using smart or dimmable lighting, flicker is almost always a driver issue. A light that looks fine to your eye but flickers on video will definitely be noticed by someone on the other side of a sales call.
Third, buy from people who publish data. Look for manufacturers who share spectral charts, driver specs, and warranty terms in writing. Per FTC rules, those published claims are accountable. You can verify them.
Fourth, understand that quality lighting is an investment in perception. This is the lesson that stuck with me.
